Hi Roland, think "expire" is not correct word, I´m not eligible to upgrade to the latest version cause the last version I upgraded was 2.0.
In other words if you loose say 3 or 4 versions you´re out! unfair, ever worst because they don´t care about "old customers". I have it since it was 3D Studio (for MS-DOS) and upgraded to 3DSMAX 1 and 2. First it was Autodesk, then they created a multimedia division called Knetix, after, they bought Discreet Logic (Flame, Inferno, Smoke, etc...) and it became Discreet 3D Studio MAX, after buying Alias (MAYA, etc...) it became Autodesk again (Multimedia division or something).
They think BIG. hahaha...
I´m quite happy with the unknown Blender now.
... also with the "unknown" Linux too... very impressed with the latest "unknown" Ubuntu by the way. lol
Download Festy Faun and make a clean install (or double boot with WinXP) !
cheers
Curious, for the last two week I've been looking for blender tutorials on the web!
I saw (and saved) some interesting demos, animations and tutorials here.
As my 3DSMAX licence (Yeah I bought it once) "expired", I mean, I can't upgrade it anymore, I installed the "last" version and I was planning to start learning Lightwave as they accept competitive upgrades for all versions of MAX.
I'm seriously planning to learn Blender and looking forward for every new feature on it.
It requires time but I'm definetely convinced, after years of using many 3D animation packages, that it'll worth the "investment"!
Also, I'm running Ubuntu 80% of the time and I'm quite impressed with some packages and the OS itself. Looks promising !!
all the best!

I would love to get Ubuntu (I had Xubuntu, but it can't run fast on my Virtual machine)
